Join Me on a Journey Through My Garden: Franschhoek Open Gardens 2023

Updated: May 28, 2024

Nestled in the enchanting Franschhoek Valley, my home became a haven for my love of gardening when I moved here in the vibrant summer of October 2021. Coincidentally, we arrived during the weekend of the renowned Franschhoek Open Gardens event, where neighbouring homes showcased their beautiful landscapes. Among them was a well-known and globally recognised landscaper, someone I hoped to meet and learn from. Inspired by this event and driven by my passion for gardening, I made a personal commitment to be part of it, knowing that contributing to a good cause through showcasing my love for plants and flowers would make it all the more rewarding. The proceeds from ticket sales for Franschhoek Open Gardens support the local Fleur de Lis Old Age Home and our emergency and medical services.

When we first moved into our home, I was greeted by a blank canvas of a garden. Aside from a few planted hedges, a beautiful lemon tree, agapanthuses, and some shrubs, there was little else. Excitement filled me as I envisioned the transformation I could create, using a multitude of plants and flowers that I adore. Having a collection of sentimental plants that had traveled with me from previous homes, I knew they would find their place in my new garden, either potted or integrated into the landscape.

Rather than disturbing the existing garden too much, I decided to let nature take its course, hoping to uncover hidden gems and unexpected growth. After a few months of observation, I began rearranging and introducing new elements, sowing seeds and watching them sprout. Being a florist, I utilized the water from my flower buckets to nourish the plants, leading to delightful surprises as familiar blossoms emerged throughout the garden. Truly, there's nothing quite like the joy of serendipitous encounters in nature.

As I became acquainted with my neighbours and fellow villagers, I discovered a community of like-minded individuals who shared my passion for plants and gardening. We started exchanging plants, seeds, and knowledge, enriching our own collections and fostering a sense of camaraderie. My growing enthusiasm led me to propagate and pot various plants, resulting in a micro nursery at home. Many of these plants will be available for sale during the upcoming Franschhoek Open Gardens 2023.

Gardening is not merely about creating visually appealing landscapes; it also has profound psychological benefits. In a future blog, I will delve into the therapeutic aspects of gardening, exploring the positive impact it can have on mental health and well-being. My garden has become a sanctuary, offering respite from the outside world and reminding me of the power of nature to heal and rejuvenate.

I am thrilled and honoured to be part of the much-anticipated Franschhoek Open Gardens 2023. It is an event that holds a special place on the Franschhoek calendar each year. Whether you are an avid gardener, a plant enthusiast, or simply appreciate the beauty of well-tended gardens, I invite you to join me in exploring the wonders of my garden. As the countdown to Franschhoek Open Gardens 2023 begins, my excitement grows exponentially. Opening my garden to fellow gardening enthusiasts, plant lovers, and those seeking inspiration from nature is a privilege.
